Resumo: The present study included the evaluation of municipal solid waste management through environmental indicators. For this, it was designed and used as a tool the Waste Management Condition Index (ICGRA). This tool was formulated by updating a proposed index validated by DANTAS (2008), the ICGR. To create the ICGRA, 22 environmental performance indicators were inserted with the purpose of adjusting the index to the requirements of the National Solid Waste Policy - PNRS and to the current conditions of evolution of the solid waste treatment. The scores were obtained through the attribution of weights to the indicators and with the numerical value reached, each municipality had its waste management classified as adequate or inadequate, according to the final values reached, in a range between zero and ten points. The ICGRA methodology was applied in ten of the twenty municipalities evaluated in 2007/2008, noting that no city reached the level of management considered adequate by the methodology. In addition to the 22 indicators inserted, the ICGRA worksheet contains the 40 original ICGR indicators used in the evaluation carried out in 2007/2008, thus, it was possible to evaluate the results in a comparative way, and it was verified that only four of the ten municipalities studied improved In the evaluation index and that the PNRS did not show positive results in the first six years of validity. The proposed methodology proved to be practical, easy to apply and useful for improving evaluation methods in the area of waste already developed, such as the IQR / IQA / IQS and ICGR indices.
