Resumo: New information technology affects in some way the quality of information systems, in what, by accelerating information flow, they cause users to retrieve a large amount of non relevant information. On line information systems and services - one among the many activities of Information Industry - are quantitative control oriented. In general they are not oriented to the quality of the recorded knowledge, although we can already have some quality measures. The study of the two cognitive poles of an information retrieval system - the cognitive process that produces and stores information and the cognitive process that occurs at information capturing and use, allows the improvemente and control of information storage and retrieval, and conducts to the aimed goals. The tendence to migrate from search done by intermediary searches to search done by final users, demands simplification, revision and reformulating of both indexing and search languages, as well as the study of cognitive structures used by people on retrieving and processing information. It will be necessary to invest on both reflexive (theorectival) and normative knowledge (practice derived). These needs induce to new educacional programs. On this study we try to observe the potencial education offered by post-gradating cources on information retrieval systems. These systems were here firstly characterized, and had their functions described. Then we compared the identified functions to information Science and Computer Science post-graduate programs. We also analised the professional practice on these systems, trying to identify how these professionals have got knowledge to perform the described functions.
