This study is about the symbolic struggle which occurs in academia among the various agents operating in the health field over making their particular view of the world prevail, and over how to define the position occupied by the nursing profession in this hierarchized space. The subjects of the research are career teachers in the field, particularly nursing teachers and students. The points of support for interpreting the data lie mainly in the ideology of the profession, in the reprodution the teaching system and the concept of social discrimination. The implications of the paths recommended by the teachers for improving the position of nursing in the university is also dealt with, as well as the need to build a collective project to enhance its status.
