Resumo: A study of the geotechnical characteristics of a Recife soft clay was made. In a layer with a thickness of 24 meters several shelby tube samples 2,5 inches O.D. were taken in three borings, in which laboratory vane, consolidation, unconfined compression, drained and undrained triaxial test were performed. The influence of sample disturbance and remolding on test results is discussed, as well as the effects of sample dimensions and velocity of shear on the strenght. Several suggestions are made with the purpose of reducing the influence of sample disturbance on test results and also decrease the duration of the tests. X-Ray pictures using common hospital equipment were made on some shelbies with the aim of identifying those with larger concentration of shells or decayed wood fragments, fissures, etc. A special Bibliography on this subject is presented, to be used in future studies. Some test on the corrosion of steel plates imbedded in the soft clay were made. Some research suggestions are made.
