Resumo: The objective of the present work is to analyze, by the finite element method, the structural behaviour of arch dams, when the existence of spillways is considered. For this purpose, it was studied a dam with simple curvature (type I), with symetrical valley defined by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), at ten different situations with respect to the number and the localization of the spillways and to the type of foundation adopted. It was analyzed the structure by the oriented language system Lorane Linear, with the use of isoparametrical, three-dimensional elements with eight nodal points and linear function of interpolation. With the results obtained, it was concluded the following: - The influence of the spillways is represented by a diminution of the capacity of redistributing of tensions in the dam. - Small variations on the number of spillways do not present significant differences on the state of tensions. - The localization of the spillways at the lower position presents better distribution of tensions than at the upper position. - The deformability of the foundation is represented by the proporcionality between the ratio of the modulus of elasticity of the concrete and of the foundation (Ec/Ef), and the gradient of the appearing tensions.
