Resumo: The dissertation investigates the concept of emancipation, theorized by Karl Marx, as well as its usage in a portion of scientific production in Education. The goal is to analyze the works presented at the Annual Congresses of National Association of Post-Graduation and Research in Education (ANPEd), in order to identify how the concept emancipation is employed. The works analyzed have been those presented in the period from 2001 to 2007 in two Work Groups (GTs): Philosophy of Education and Popular Education. Initially, the possible origin and philosophical roots of the concept in question is exposed, as well as its construction in the works of Karl Marx. Then, some aspects related to the use of the concept in the corpus studied are shown. It has been certified that the marxian concept of emancipation has been strongly influenced by Modernity ideals and that its main characteristic is to be a political and revolutionary concept, i.e., it is seen as a social process that seeks a radical change in the current social structure. Therefore, human emancipation (real emancipation) is possible only under a new social order, overcoming alienation and the system based on capital. The central hypothesis of the investigation has been confirmed, as far as it has been noticed that in a great portion of the corpus the concept studied has been employed indiscriminately, without a real concern for the theoretical and philosophical referential in which it is included. Besides, it has been detected that the concept of emancipation is not usually associated to Marx‟s theory nor recognized as an essentially marxian concept. On the contrary, there are indications that the approaches to emancipation keep a certain distance of Marx‟s theory. Finally, the investigation has proved the existence of a kind of theoretical looseness regarding the employment of scientific concepts. Such a position can lead to trivialization and misuse of key-concepts for the understanding of scientific theories highly relevant for the educational field
