Resumo: In potato breeding programs, tuber appearance and processing quality have been investigated to support the demands of consumers, industries and farmers. For a new potato genotype, many characters must be considered in the selection. Therefore, it is essential that the breeding is dynamic and efficient. The establishment of selection criteria is essential in breeding programs, providing efficient genetic gain for interest traits. The objectives of this study was to estimate genetic variability, heritability and expected selection responses for skin texture and fry color of potato in hybrid populations and their correlation with yield traits, determine the frequency of clones with smooth skin and light fry color in hybrid populations of potato. The research comprised two studies, the first was developed using four hybrid populations derived from contrasting parents for reducing sugar content, in autumn of 2007 and 2008. In the second study, was analyzed three populations derived from crosses between parents contrasting in fry color and skin texture, the experiment was conduced in spring 2008. The first study results, showed that to generate populations with light fry color is necessary to include at least one parent with low sugar. The highest estimated genetic value was observed in the population originating from crosses between parents with extreme levels of reducing sugars. In the second study, the heritability estimate was moderate for skin texture and low for fry color. Skin texture and fry color was independent and can be selected simultaneously. The associations between these characters and yield components were weak, suggesting that there is reduced genetic association between these characters.
