Resumo: There is compelling evidence that physical activity is an important preventive factor for the development of a series of chronic diseases. In spite of this information, there is also evidence that physical activity levels are declining at the population level. The promotion of activity-friendly workplaces should be prioritized, because individuals spend a significant proportion of their days at the workplace. Objective: To describe the provision, opportunities and incentives related to physical activity practice given to workers of industries in Pelotas, Brazil. Methods: Cross-sectional study. Industries were initially identified from the database of the Pelotas Industry Center (CIPEL). In addition, the database of the Special Guide Brazilian Press (EBGE) was searched and further industries were included. We administered a questionnaire to the representative of the board of each industry, in order to evaluate the physical spaces, installations and how (if at all) physical activity is provided, made available and divulgated to the workers. Results: Out of the 81 industries which were part of the sample, only five reported to offer physical activity classes in during the working day. All industries offering such programs have more than 50 employees. In only 10 industries, there is space for physical activity practice inside the installations of the industry and in eight of them, sports courts are available. Twenty-three industries reported to have agreements with other companies in order to give opportunity to workers to practice sports outside the industry environment; 13 provide this opportunity for free to workers. The most frequently reported physical activity incentive given by the industries was the existence of sports teams, which represent the industry in small competitions. Conclusion: Physical activity promotion in the industries of Pelotas, Brazil is in accordance with the global trend, in which only big companies offer physical activity for their workers. Most industries do not provide opportunities and incentives related to physical activity to the workers.
