Resumo: | In the maturity and old age AIDS presents specific characteristics because it is related to individuals with other associated pathologies, specifically from the old age, which cover the symptoms of AIDS, producing, in some cases, uncertain or inconclusive diagnostics. The interest for Quality of Life in people over 50 years old with HIV+ is relevant because of this question involves situations of discrimination, stigmatization and abandonment, and it produces impact on the affective relations of these people, as well. Objectives: To verify the experience of AIDS and its relation to the QV of people living with HIV/AIDS over 50 years old, who have been assisted in a specialized hospital in the city of João Pessoa-PB, was the Main Objective of this study. Method: 43 people living with HIV+ participate of this study, in a non-probabilistic and accidental way. The ages of these people varied from 50 to 78 years old (M=55; SD=4,6), and the majority of people were male (62,8%). Moreover, in order to make a comparison to the level of QV of the general population, 43 people were asked to participate of the study; the ages of these people varied from 50 to 87 years old (M=59; SD=8,6), and the majority of participants were female (76,7%). With the purpose of collect data, the following instruments were used: bio-demographic questionnaire, Quality of Life Scale for the old age (WHOQOL-OLD) and in-depth interview. Multivariate and descriptive statistic analysis were used, through the statistic program SPSS, 15.0 version, with the intention of analyzing the data of the bio-demographic questionnaire and WHOQOL-OLD. Content Analysis to analyses the interviews data was used. Results: The HIV+ participants showed a positive medium score of 55,3 (SD=14,6) in the General Factor of the QV, demonstrating a relatively good QV. However, the participants of the general population presented a general level of QV of 59,3 (SD=17,1), higher than the level of the HIV+ participants. In the evaluation per factors, the results indicated low levels of QV in the Death and Die and Intimacy facets for the HIV+ participants and a low level of QV of the participants of the general population just for the Death and Die factor. Concerning the bio-demographic variables, it were identified significant statistically differences (p<0,05) among the criteria groups of the HIV+ participants in relation to the Autonomy , Future, present and past activities , Death and Die and Intimacy factors. Furthermore, concerning the HIV+ participants, the results indicated that the higher the level of religiosity, the better their Quality of Life. From the speech analysis of the participants, two thematic classes, 13 categories and 21 sub-categories emerged, namely: Thematic Class I Quotidian with AIDS (categories: Contagion, Diagnostic, Perception of AIDS, Affective-Sexual Relationship, AIDS in the old age, Support, Prejudice, Work and Perspectives) and Thematic Class II Assistance to AIDS in the old age (categories: assistance, treatment and prevention).
