Resumo: This research refers to a study about the geodiversity of the terminal portion of the lower course of Paraíba do Norte river, emphasizing its contribution to the territorial occupation process of the Coast of Paraiba. The historiography of the region reveals that the choice of the site to become the settlement was conditioned by the physical nature of the area, taking into account the relief, the rocks, the soil types and the occurrence of water for human consumption. The area chosen to become the first nucleus of settlement (the Portuguese) in Paraíba land was located upstream of the estuary, on the left bank of Sanhauá river. The physical singularity of this site met the immediate needs for the implantation of a population nucleus in the colonial era, and from that point began the occupation of the region. The objective of this research is to evaluate the geodiversity of the terminal portion of the lower course of Paraíba do Norte river, highlighting its contribution to the territorial occupation process of the Coast of Paraíba. Therefore, a holistic approach focused on the complexity of the phenomena and based on the geodiversity concept was applied. As methodology, it was sought to make use of prior knowledge through secondary, bibliographic, cartographic and documentary data collections. It was also carried out field work to collect primary data, and applied cartographic techniques for the preparation of thematic maps on a Geographic Information System (GIS). The fact that there is a system of geological faults traversing the boundaries of Paraíba do Norte river estuary, associated with hot and humid weather of the coast, explains the singularity of the region and accounts for the large amount of limestone, laterite, clay and water; for the formation of relatively flat reliefs and variable topography; and the development of favorable soil to sugarcane cultivation. This research allowed the observation that, within the selected area to study, there was a regionalization where each relief sector exercised a feature that the colonizer assigned and, until today, can be observed through spatial formations of the past that are mixed with the most modern.
