Resumo: The main objective of this work is the improvement of the poor gas cleaning system, which is produced by a co-current gasifier, open top, with thermal capacity of 4 kW. The gasifier was connected to a genset having prime power rating of 2 kW. The entire experimental apparatus, its assembly and the relevant tests were carried out in the Laboratory of Innovation, at the Center of Technology at the Federal University of Paraíba. The original inner walls of the reactor made of fire clay, were worn ou. Therefore, they were replaced by a tube of stainless steel, making easier the downdraft flux of biomass. An ash clearing system was developed and installed in the reactor to remove ash layer deposited on the grill, helping gas flow. A conditioning system for the poor gas, based on gas pulverization in an aqueous medium was installed in the gasifier exit. A rudimentary tar collection system was developed and mounted in the inlet pipe of the internal combustion engine (ICE).The experiments were performed initially to verify the influence of the ash-clearing device on the consumption/power ratio. The gas washing system was designed, built and assembled. As a result, it produced a 40.39 % reduction in the tar present at the poor gas, as well as 16.17 % in the electrical power generated, which fell to 1.71 kW, due to the effect of pressure drop. On the other hand, the poor gas low heating value showed an increase of 7.45 %.
