Resumo: The present study aimed to analyze how university extension actions at the Instituto Federal da Paraíba, in Cabedelo / PB, develop an understanding of the academic and municipal community focused on sustainability. Thus, a bibliographic survey was carried out on the main concepts related to this theme, where the historical contextualization about the university, university extension, sustainability, the Instituto Federal da Paraíba and the Campus Cabedelo was approached. Therefore, a survey was made on these concepts based on studies developed by several authors. This research constitutes a case study, with a qualitative approach and of an applied nature, in which the locus of the investigation was the Campus Cabedelo. Thus, the two most active permanent extension nuclei among the seven existing ones were selected for analysis. We sought to analyze the actions developed by these nucleu's from five dimensions of sustainability: social, environmental, economic, cultural and political. In addition, semistructured interviews were conducted for data collection. Regarding the sample, we sought to cover the various segments involved with university extension, thus, the following quantities were determined: 02 (two) Coordinators of the extension nucleu's; 08 (eight) members of the Cabedelo community participating in the extension projects; 01 (one) Research Coordinator / Extension of the institution; 04 (four) social partners of the projects and 04 (four) students who participate or participated in the university extension projects, totaling 19 (nineteen) interviewed. The results found demonstrate that the institution develops university extension actions that encompass several dimensions of sustainability. In addition, it is emphasized that the extension nucleu's surveyed have a positive assessment of the internal and external community. However, some points to be improved regarding the institution's performance were identified. Therefore, it is of fundamental importance that the IFPB develops strategies that will minimize the negative points and reinforce the positive ones in order to improve the extension practice and thereby continue to generate positive impacts on the community of Cabedelo / PB.
