Resumo: In university library environments, the use of social media platforms as a support for the consolidation of the communicative process has been a natural evolution stimulated by users in the academic world, quite susceptible to changes and innovations, considering that, the information that was formerly disseminated through physical murals migrated to online communication platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, among other similar ones. The general objective of this study is to reflect on the communicative process of university libraries in higher education institutions in the context of social media. For this, this research has a quantitative and qualitative approach, considering that this type of approach aims to quantify collected data, as well as to identify characteristics, profiles and structures, respectively. The content Analysis method was used in order to categorize the data collected through observation, seeking to classify them according to the previously identified themes. Therefore, the research sample was represented by fifteen university libraries that are part of higher education institutions that were highlighted in the ranking of Webometrics in the 2018 edition, standing out in terms of academic presence on the web. As a result of this research and based on the data collected, as well as on reading for the elaboration of the theoretical framework, a model was built that illustrates the communicative process of university libraries on social media platforms. Therefore, it was concluded that the university library needs to be imbued with the relevance of establishing a team responsible for the digital communicative process, which is aware of how the communicative process is structured on the library's social media platforms, as well as having a digital communication model that guides the communicative process in all its stages, from the creation of the content that will be shared, to the stage of use by the users, in which the information is cognitively assimilated, transformed into knowledge and applied in the creation of information products and services.
