Resumo: The research deals with student assistance by granting financial aid for technical High School students of the Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of Paraíba, Brazil, located on the Santa Rita campus. This study research problem refers to the students’ perceptions of the influence of financial assistance on their permanence in the programs offered by the institution. To do so, data were collected from a group of 23 students of Environmental and Computing studies through an electronic questionnaire. The study also considered personal, social, economic, and familiar data to identify their socioeconomic status to comprehend the relevance of the assistance and its relation to students’ permanence in the program. The results showed a positive perception of students about the financial aid for permanence as it motivates them to continue and conclude the courses, above all, because they qualify them for a good opportunity in the labor market, which is fundamentally relevant. Data also pointed out that the quality of the teaching offered by the institution plays a role in getting a position in the labor market, and that financial difficulties are an impediment to permanence, therefore, assistance is fundamental for them.
