The aim of this work is the development of an energy efficiency indicator for water distribution networks. This indicator makes possible the diagnosis of the hydraulic and energetic behavior of a water distribution network by operators of sanitation companies by comparing the network operation in a reference scenario (in general, the project scenario) and the scenario for which this efficiency is being analyzed. Two water supply networks have been studied in various operational situations, along the useful life of the project, in relation to the pipe transport capacity. Very coherent results have been obtained, allowing the attainment of information to managers and technicians of the supply concessionaires regarding possible rehabilitation intervention needs in the analyzed networks. Two case studies were carried out: one for the water supply network of the city of Itororó, in the Brazilian state of Bahia, and another one for the distribution network in the regions of Bessa, Jardim Oceania and Aeroclube, in João Pessoa, the capital city of the Brazilian state of Paraíba. In both cases, the results verified the validity and relevance of the proposed indicator.
