The purpose of the present dissertation is to investigate the characterization of Ana, a chacacter in both the novel Lavoura arcaica (1975), by Raduan Nassar, and in its filmic adaptation, by Luiz Fernando Carvalho, LavourArcaica (2001). The research analyses the archaic tradition, the social, cultural and symbolic aspects that permeate the narratives; it also considers the intertextual resonances present in the book, in the film and in the characters composition. Since this research is inserted in the intersection od literature and cinema studies, the analysis od character, having Ana as a focus, emphasizes her dance and her silence. The discussion is based on literary and filmic theoretical and critical principles, besides also incorporating those of other areas, as for instance, psychoanalysis.
