This work had as general objective to analyze the instrumentality of Social Work, from the perspective of the technical-operative dimension in the intervention with people with disabilities in the Centro Especializado de Reabilitação – IV, in João Pessoa-PB. The research was typified as exploratory and field, based on a bibliographic and documentary survey and on the application of a questionnaire by Google Forms, with social workers who work at the CER-IV, whose sample was intentional and for accessibility in a universe composed of 16 (sixteen) professionals. Data were analyzed using the critical-dialectical method and the content analysis technique. The results revealed divergence in purposes between institutional and user demands. With regard to the technical-operational dimension, despite the mention of the Policy for Assistance to Persons with Disabilities and Social Service regulations, there was insufficient use of more specific ordinances and norms. Finally, the institutional reality and the needs of the assisted segment pointed to the division of spaces and moments between two contradictory instrumentalities in Social Work work: one formal-abstract and the other critical-dialectical, instrumentality understood as a mediation for elucidating the multiple reality determinations, which allows you to work with the subjects in a perspective of integrality, autonomy, respect and defense of the rights of disabled people, compatible with the Professional Ethical-Political Project.
