Resumo: The field of music education has shown a significant expansion of studies in the search to contemplate the contexts of popular music practices where processes of musical teaching and learning occur. In this perspective, this work highlights the studies related to popular music and its entry into formal educational institutions, especially in Brazilian universities. In this context, this work has as its theme the teaching and learning processes of electric bass in higher education. For this, its main focus of study is the reality of teaching electric bass in the Music Degree Course at UFPB. The work is based on the studies of music education around the teaching of musical instruments, higher education in popular music and related areas. Thus, the research work aimed to understand the main teaching and learning practices of electric bass in the Music Degree Course at the Federal University of Paraíba. To this end, a case study was conducted on this reality between March 2019 and May 2020. The work had a qualitative approach, as it focused on a universe of meanings, motives, pretensions, beliefs, values and attitudes that correspond to a deeper reality of human relations, processes and phenomena that cannot be reduced to the mere operationalization of variables. Thus, based on this methodological perspective, it was possible to describe, explain and interpret the teaching and learning practices of electric bass in the Music Degree Course at the Federal University of Paraíba. From the main results of the work it was possible to understand that the skills acquired by students of electric bass are based, in practice, in diverse contexts, which range from non- school spaces to traditional academic training. Still, it was possible to understand that the main teaching and learning practices of electric bass in the Music Degree Course, verified through observations, interviews and questionnaires took place through the study of methods aimed at electric bass or not, exercising the questions techniques and musical reading, as well as the repertoire and improvisation, the latter being practiced only with students who already have a certain musical background.
