Resumo: Achieving high productivity and quality of papaya fruits are directly associated with a balanced fertilization, in which the phosphate fertilizers with the soil correction with lime application play an important role in the agricultural production system. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of phosphorus fertilization and liming on soil properties, growth, productivity, foliar nutrient and fruit quality of papaya. The factors evaluated were lime application in the main portion (0 to 1500 kg ha-1 ) and five doses of P (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 g plant-1 ) as subplots. The plots were divided into two sub installments, the experimental unit consists of four working plants totaling 160 plants for evaluation. The foliar nutrient content and soil fertility were evaluated. The height and diameter of the stem of the plants were measured every two months. Twelve months after planting were evaluated the number and fruit weight, length and cross sectional diameter, average fruit weight, beyond pulp yield, soluble solids and titratable acidity. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and regression, the effect of limestone evaluated by F test, and phosphorus levels by applying polynomial regression. Phosphorus in the presence of limestone increased levels of phosphorus, calcium and magnesium in the soil. In the absence of lime increased levels of potassium, aluminum and hydrogen and aluminum in the soil. The fruit weight decreased in the limestone presence, since in the absence phosphorus had a positive effect up to a dose of 61.6 g phosphorous plant-1 . In the presence of limestone, phosphorus increased productivity to the estimated dose of 43.5 g plant-1 .
