Resumo: | This research intends to analyze the evolution of Brazil‟s Foreign Policy concerning to Portuguese Africa in the period from 1953 to 1964. More specifically, the aim relies on identifying the domestic actors that influence Brazilian diplomatic relations in the process of decolonizing Portuguese colonies in Africa. At first, the focus of the work is the history of relations between Brazil and Portugal from 1910 to 1953, which culminated with the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Consultation (1953). Then, the attention moves to the Foreign Policy of the president Juscelino Kubistchek‟s government and the influence of Gilberto Freyre's Luso-tropicalism on Brazilian African politics. Finally, the work examines the Independent Foreign Policy (IFP) of the Governments Jânio Quadros and João Goulart, in order to determine the guidelines of foreign policy with respect to the African decolonization process. The IFP was in favor for the emancipation of non-autonomous territories and that approach signaled a break with a traditional alliance with the Portuguese. However, the attempts to break up with IFP turned out to be unsuccessful and were interrupted by the 1964 military coup. With the military in power, the support for the Portuguese colonial policy was once again restored. The research uses a qualitative methodology, with an emphasis on the historical method, through which is made a detailed scientific review of the existing literature. |
