Resumo: Introduction: Stroke is a chronic degenerative disease that has shown a reduction in mortality in recent years due to the advancement of science in the health area, however, its prevalence has increased significantly as the population ages. Those affected by stroke suffer from motor and cognitive deficits that affect their ability to perform activities of daily living. With the increase in dependency, new protagonists appear to help with the needs of dependent elderly people, caregivers. Caregivers are faced with challenges that encompass not only care, but also social, affective and psychological circumstances, making them prone to the development of overload and mental disorders. Objective: to assess burden and the presence of common mental disorders in caregivers of elderly people with stroke sequelae. Method: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, carried out at the homes of 146 caregivers of elderly people in the city of Maceió from July to November 2022. A sociodemographic questionnaire, the Barthel index, was used for data collection. for inclusion of caregivers in the research, the Bakas Careviging Outcome Scale and the Self Report Questionnaire. Data analysis was performed with descriptive and inferential statistics. The project was approved under protocol nº 043190/22 and CAAE: 58314822.8.0000.5188. Results: The results found show that 69.86% of caregivers were overloaded and 67.12% had a common mental disorder. Burden showed a significant relationship with the variables age (p= 0.0385) and income (p=0.0342) and common mental disorders showed a statistical relationship with the variables age (p= 0.0438) and education (p=0.319 ). Regarding the relationship between overload and the presence of mental disorders, individuals with overload are 6.05 times more likely to develop mental disorders than individuals without overload (p-value = 0.0004). Conclusion: The results found are capable of making one reflect on the impacts on the caregiver's life. It is important to consider the results of this study for the benefit of this population, using them as a guide for planning nursing interventions offered to caregivers.
