Charcoal is a renewable and relevant energy source for the state of Paraíba economy. This thesis analyzed the regional concentration and the sustainable aspects of charcoal production in the semiarid region of Paraíba. In particular, it analyzed the regional concentration of charcoal production in Paraíba between 1994 and 2013; Evaluated the use of the forest resources of the Caatinga biome in the state of Paraíba, and; evaluated the environmental performance of a company that produces charcoal using a Corporate Sustainability Index. To achieve the objectives, it was used: the indicators of Concentration Ratio [CR (k)], Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), Theil entropy Index (E) and the Gini Index (G); the characterization of the use of forest resources through bibliographic review and secondary data; also the Environmental Sustainability Index (ISE). The main results found were: that the counties CR(k) achieved was low to moderately low collaboration and CR(k) for microregions was moderately high to high; the HHI indicator showed concentration trends in competitive markets, and G showed a strong to very strong inequality for the municipalities and microregions; that there is a continuous destruction of the vegetation cover, where a better use of the resources through forest management will bring great benefits to a forest production in Paraíba's semiarid; and, although there is a background knowledge of the company studied about actions such as environmental practices adopted in the charcoal production sector, its main objective is to comply with legal actions of its activity.
