The present work aims to study the quality of formal employment in Rio Grande do Norte state and in the Northeast region in the period 2001-2010. Therefore we calculated the Index of Quality Formal Employment (IQEF), which is the arithmetic average of four indicators: education level, the turnover rate, rate of deconcentration and the average wage rate. The data source used to achieve these results was the Annual Relation of Social Information (RAIS) published by Ministry of Labour and Employment (MTE). MTE‟s DARDO software was used to calculate the IQEF. A literature search was performed in order to obtain elements for the construction of theoretical work, as well, to draw a picture that would serve to support discussions on key trends indicated by the evolution of IQEF in Rio Grande do Norte state and Northeast region. The study of the dynamics of the labor market on both locations showed an upward trend in the formalization degree of work relations that reached virtually all sectors of activity. The discussion of the results of IQEF, between 2001 and 2010, showed that the labor market in the two selected areas also presented a trend in the quality improvement of formal employment in those locations.
