This study intends to analyze O Ateneu, a novel conceived by Raul Pompéia, based in an archetypal theory. We propuse to evidence the intrinsic archetypal relationship between the plot of the Pompeia’s novel and the biblical narrative that deals with the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, two mythological cities of the Old Testament. While reading the critical texts concerning O Ateneu, we perceive an analytical gap about the Biblical references contained in this book. After reading all the biblical mentions scattered throughout the Pompéia’s novel, we perceive an archetypal relationship between novel’s plot and the biblical myth concerning the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. This analytic proposal is made possible by the theoretical concepts of Northrop Frye, in Anatomy of Criticism and other auxiliary theories.
