Resumo: The present research aims to describe the conceptions and practices, of frevo musicians, about the usage of patterns as a tool for the development of language improvisation in the genre. After a review about the concepts of musical improvisation, as well as the different typologies of improvisation, we list an idiomatic improvisation as the central typology of this research. There was also a review of the discussions in the frevo literature that could provide information on how this practice has been developed in the genre over the years. This investigation corresponds to a multiple case study, in which the sampling was represented by a group of 8 musicians, each with more than 30 years of experience in frevo and with improvisations proven through recordings and live performances. The data were initially collected from semi-structured interviews. However, given the examples of improvisations cited by the musicians participating in the research, we adopted other methodological procedures, such as the transcription and analysis of improvised solos. The results show the existence of both formal and informal practices during the learning process of improvisation of aforementioned musicians, where aurality, the contact with other improvisers and enculturation all stand out as the essential elements of this process. The analysis of improvised solos suggested that frevo patterns are a basic material for the development of improvisations, as they help in thematic construction, in the flow of ideas and, mainly, in the idiomatic interpretation of the solos. in the interim, it was possible to understand the singularities of the improvisations performed by frevo musicians, as well as their conceptions and motivations about the theme
