Resumo: This work investigated how teachers with major in Art Education from UFPB conceive and practice Visual Arts in the CREIs (Reference Centers in Child Education, from the Portuguese Centros de Referência em Educação Infantil ) in João Pessoa/PB. The study was grounded on the National Curricular Referential for Child Education, as well as on the Resolution 009/2006, because they are, respectively, national and municipal official policies. This study is a qualitative research in the form of case study, which comprehends five teachers and five CREIs in the city of João Pessoa/PB. A questionnaire was used to collect data regarding professional and personal profiles, and a field research was carried out to observe the teaching practices in Visual Arts in the CREIs. The teachers profile is young and mostly female. They demonstrated to be committed with their professional practice and willing to complement their academic development. The research detected that some of the conceptions and practices of Visual Arts teaching dialog with the official references and academic studies. However, a few actions and thoughts persist to be old-fashioned, regarding the understanding of art teaching as activity and sensibility.
