Resumo: The purposes of this thesis were to apprehend the social representations of the domestic violence elaborated by women who are victims and to verify the implications of this violence in their quality of life and resilience, comparing these constructs with women who did not suffer violence. It was also verified the principles which originate the variability of the SR of the quality of life and resilience in the group of women victims and non-victims of domestic violence. This study was based on the theoretical aspects of the Social Representations theory (Moscovici 2003; Doise, 1992), as it helped to apprehend an elaborated and shared knowledge by women in situation of domestic violence and to understand the social anchors which promote this phenomenon. A field research was performed in a public health service from João Pessoa city, which serves women in a general way and has a specialized center to receive women victims of domestic violence. About 150 women participated of this study, with ages varying from 18 to 53 years old, with incomes up to one minimum salary, being 70 victims and 80 non-victims of domestic violence. Besides this instrument, the women answered a social-demographic questionnaire, the quality of life scale (Whoqol-brief) and the resilience scale (Pesce et al, 2005). From the 70 women victims of violence, obeying the criterion of saturation (Sá 1998), 27 answered the semi-structured interviews, which were analyzed by the thematic content analysis (Bardin, 2010). The questionnaires and scales were analyzed by the statistical package PASW, being used inferential and descriptive statistics. The results revealed that women victims of violence elaborated complex and revealed SR, in which the violence reaches the family as a whole and is objectified as a threatening and destructive element. They elaborated ambivalent SR about the aggressor among negative and affective anchors which foment the cycle of violence, which is created mainly by the relations of power. The women who were victims demonstrated psychic suffering with negative biopsycho- social consequences; however they pointed indications of resilience regarding the perspectives of future. In the comparative study, by the measurement of the quality of life scale, it was observed significantly lower scores in the group of women victims of violence in relation to those non-victims of violence in all domains, being this difference focused on labor aspects, self-esteem, and social relations. Concerning the resilience, both groups acquired high levels and they did not differ in the domains, when related to the condition of victim. All in all, it was verified that the phenomenon of domestic violence has its social anchors in the male domination and female submission and it brings serious consequences to the victims health, however it was verified that they owns some internal resources regarding to positive forms of coping with this phenomenon.
