Resumo: |
This dissertation aims at analyzing how teachers are evaluated in two Brazilian magazines, that is, Veja and Isto é, in editions published between 2006 and 2008. Journalistic texts are commonly considered impartial and objective. In this sense, analyzing evaluation in news magazines could not be productive. However, in this work it is demonstrated that evaluation is very important in creating certain rhetorical effects pursued by the authorial voice. The theoretical framework adopted here are Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and Appraisal System. This system investigates how evaluations, direct or indirect, are created through language. Appraisal, then, refers to “the interpersonal side in language, with the subjective presence of writers/speakers in texts as they adopt stances towards both the material they present and those with whom they communicate”. The analysis demonstrated that attitudinal positions are mostly negatives. Besides, it shows that the most evaluated human participant, in the category judgment, is the Brazilian teacher. In Veja magazine this evaluation is mostly negative. In Isto é Magazine there is a slight difference between positive and negative evaluation, but evaluation towards the positive side is more frequent. |
