Resumo: |
Teachers have the primary role of educating and, at the same time, managing their own emotions to meet the expectations associated with their profession. This professional is exposed to several stressful situations, both in the teacher-student relationship and in the context of institutional pressures, which can lead to physical and mental illness. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the teacher needed to master digital technologies to, in the teaching-learning process, create spaces for participation, dialogic reflection, and the development of critical thinking. The objective of the present work is to evaluate the level of stress and its relationship with the empathic behavior of teachers from Higher Education Institutions in Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, an aspect of work stress in teachers was analyzed; the dimensions of empathy in teachers were characterized and it was verified whether there is a relationship between sociodemographic variables, work stress and empathic behavior in teachers. The research had a quantitative approach and cross-sectional design. Sampling was intentional non-probabilistic, simple random. The sample consisted of 276 university professors who make up the teaching staff of public and private universities in all Brazilian regions. The volunteer received the online form and, upon agreeing to participate in the research, was directed to the sociodemographic forms and the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory and Empathy Inventory surveys. In the analysis, the absolute and relative frequency of sociodemographic data and correlation tests were performed to verify the association between the study variables. Data were tabulated and analyzed using SPSS software. The results show low levels of exhaustion and disengagement, parameters associated with work stress, although there was not a significant portion with symptoms of Burnout Syndrome. Correlations showed a low relationship between exhaustion, sociodemographic aspects and empathic behavior. It was found, in this sense, that when seeking to identify the relationship between work stress and empathic behavior, it is important to be careful in generalizing the information analyzed, since the results are the result of professors who work in different institutions and located in specific regions of the country. |
