The present study had as main objective to investigate which factors influence the teachers of the municipal education network of Santa Maria/RS to abandon the teaching career in contemporary times. The research carried out is a case study, of a quali-quantitative character that sought to identify these factors and understand the reason why professors ask for resignation from the position. Data collection was carried out from January 2014 to December 2018. Firstly, a bibliographic research was carried out on the subject in online electronic databases, books, articles. Gatti (2014), Lapo (2003), Rebolo (2012) Huberman (2000), are some theorists that support the research. Subsequently, a documentary analysis was carried out in the database of the Municipality of Santa Maria/RS, in order to have access to the prevalence of the number of exonerations of teachers in the network. The sample was composed of professors who had been exonerated in the last 5 years. The non-probabilistic sampling technique - snowball effect was used to compose the study sample. Study participants answered an online survey questionnaire. Subsequently, 8 teachers were selected for an interview, to verify the factors that influenced the dismissal request. For the analysis of the collected data the content analysis technique was used. The study pointed out that the lack of teacher appreciation, poor working conditions, low wages, lack of incentive for initial and continuing education, disrespect and overwork lead to exhaustion, disenchantment, frustration and, consequently, to abandoning the teaching career. It is also noteworthy that the municipality of Santa Maria/RS, despite the negative factors, what stands out is the will to overcome, to grow, therefore, to seek the new, the professional and as a consequence, financial ascension.
