Resumo: Maternal and neonatal health care is of great concern to promote a paradigm shift in the current obstetric model. Caring provides the emergence of methods and instruments for nursing work. In the context of newborn care, one of the methodologies used by nurses is the Systematization of Nursing Care, which enables organized, systematized, continuous and safe care. Thus, it is intended, through a protocol, to enable the systematization of care for the newborn in a maternity hospital with habitual risk. Therefore, this study is justified by the theme included in the National Agenda of Health Research Priorities, the Ministry of Health in Axis 4 - Development of technologies and innovation in health and Axis 14 - Maternal and child health. Furthermore, included in the Sustainable Development Goals in Axis 03: Health and well-being, promoting a global action plan to face challenges present on the world stage. Objective: To know the perception of nurses in relation to the nursing process directed to newborns in a maternity hospital at usual risk and, to socialize the creation of a protocol assistencial for the newborn of a maternity hospital usual risk. Method: The methodological approach was conducted through an action research, based on focus groups with obstetric nurses and residents in Obstetric Nursing at a maternity hospital at usual risk in the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Data analysis took place through thematic analysis. The research was approved by the ethics committee under protocol number 4.798.174 e CAAE:46222121.8.00005306. For the creation of the protocol, the steps recommended by Anvisa were followed and guided by the nursing process of the physical examination of the newborn. Results: The results of this research showed that the nursing process is a device that induces self-reflection and self-criticism for nurses and, in addition, the same configures as a (re)significant tool for newborn care. In summary, it is shown that the nursing process is a driver of best practices in the context of obstetric and neonatal nursing. Therefore, it subsidizes the creation of technical/technological products, for example, in this research, of a care protocol. Final considerations: The nursing process directed to the care of newborns in a maternity of habitual risk is not just a tool theoretical-methodological approach to guide and qualify care, but in a technology that induces self-reflection and professional self-criticism, with a view to developing new knowledge and practices both in terms of management and nursing care. Product and its applicability: The technical/technological product is configured as a care protocol and is directly related to the systematization of nursing care for newborns in maternity hospitals at usual risk. Its importance is due to the fact that the early identification of signs and symptoms in the physical examination of the newborn favors the design of nursing care, in an individualized, independent and qualified way. Also, the product presents replicability and scope for scenarios similar to what was proposed, allowing real impact in the short and medium term.
