Resumo: |
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the oral health status of pregnant women attended in public health services in the city of Santa Maria - RS, in order to delineate the local reality of this population and to guide the planning and implementation of health actions, which will result in better care of the oral health of mothers and their future babies. The study design was of a cross-sectional type with the participation of 30 pregnant women. The prevalence and severity of the cavities were evaluated using the CPO-S index, according to the criteria described by the WHO (WHO, 1997) from which the average CPO-D (permanent dentition) can be inferred, as well as the periodontal condition. It was observed that the participants were mostly young (an average of 24.5 years old) and of low socioeconomic level and low schooling. Regarding the perception of oral health, half of the women considered their oral health good or excellent and all reported brushing their teeth daily with fluoride dentifrice. The average CPO-D was 6.2, and 80% of the pregnant women presented at least 1 tooth with caries. All presented plaque, almost all (90%) suffered bleeding at the probing and a small percentage presented dental traumatism (26.7%). Due to the disagreement between the data declared by the pregnant women and the clinical data obtained, a need for an improved access to dental services was verified, as well as actions that help promote health. In this sense, after analyzing the data, it was decided that we should prepare a booklet on oral health care as a product of the study, as well as a poster to publicize it. It was concluded that health education is directly related to care, with the development of this technology, it is expected to encourage pregnant women to perform prenatal dentistry and to take care of their health. |
