Resumo: This research was developed within the scope of the Professional Master's Degree in Science and Mathematics at the Franciscan University (UFN), in the Teaching and Learning search line. The research problem we intended to solve was: In what aspects can the construction and maintenance of a vertical garden contribute to scientific literacy in a kindergarten class? Based on this problem, the following general objective was established: to create and maintain a vertical garden in kindergarten as a resource for scientific literacy. It is characterized as a teaching and learning space for the development of scientific literacy in Early Childhood Education, in the Municipal Education Network of Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. From this perspective, discussions were established about the BNCC and the fields of experience in Early Childhood Education (BRASIL, 2017). A qualitative, exploratory approach was adopted. The data collection instruments were the children's and teacher’s records and research on Early Childhood Education, which were analyzed according to Content Analysis (BARDIN, 2011).The study has as an educational product a Vertical Vegetable Garden in Early Childhood Education: a resource for scientific literacy. The results were: a) Potentialities of building a vertical garden for the development of scientific literacy in Early Childhood Education, providing better conditions for students to learn about scientific concepts in the area of natural sciences, making them active participants in the construction of knowledge and awakening their curiosity; b) Challenges of building the vertical garden for the development of scientific literacy in Early Childhood Education: the infrastructure to carry out the garden and the workforce to help organize and build the plant beds. There are many aspects that often make it difficult to carry out this type of project in schools, such as: the availability of adequate school space, and maintenance of the garden during school holidays. It was found that there are indeed contributions to the scientific literacy of children in kindergarten, with the school being a teaching and learning space for the construction of a vertical garden according to the activities carried out.
