Resumo: In this study, it is investigated the relation of the teaching material, that is, the study guides used in the 12th grade of a big private high school in Cuiabá-MT, with the linguistic policies favorable to the conception of Portuguese as a plural language. In order to make this study possible, the verb agreement (VA) approach will be focused on. The choice of the verb agreement is due to the fact that it is an area of constant friction between the standard norm and non-standard norm and, therefore an appropriate field to the application of sociolinguistic knowledge, nuclear to the new teaching paradigm. The study revisits the grammatical tradition, responsible for the production and reproduction of the purist discourse about the VA norms. It also revisits the sociolinguistic studies, responsible for the variationist discourse about the VA norms. A survey of the use of VA by twelfth grade students from their written production is done. And finally, an analysis of the treatment given to VA by the study guides used by the students who wrote the compositions that were analyzed is carried out. Methodologically, the project involves three types of research: bibliographic research in the field of grammatical tradition and sociolinguistics to map the studies on the theme, aiming at making a counterpoint between the “ideal” and “real” norms of de VA in Portuguese and characterizing the phenomenon as variable and non categorical; sociolinguistic research of the written production of the high school students to apprehend the VA norm commonly used by them, a norm in the sense of what is ‘normal’ and not in the ‘normative’ sense; and archival research of the sections and issues of the portuguese language study guides that address the VA, in order to evaluate their ideological-discursive positioning. The aim of this study is to contribute to a linguistic education that will prepare citizens free from any linguistic prejudice and competent to use the language in any circumstances.
