Resumo: Alcohol use and alcoholism have become a priority issue on the agenda of global public health, related to health problems. Population-based studies conducted in Brazil and Midwest Region showed a high proportion of alcohol use and alcoholism, however are still few studies of this behavior and this morbidity among workers. In this way, the purpose of this study is to analyze the prevalence of alcohol use and alcoholism and associated factors among public university servers, from Cuiabá in the year 2011. It´s a crosssectional study, with systematic sampling technique consists of 474 servers, applied a self-administered questionnaire anonymously. Analyses were performed univariate, bivariate and Poisson Regression. There were prevalences of 84.8% of lifetime alcohol consumption and 6.3% of alcoholism. In the final model remained associated with alcohol use and alcoholism sex (PR = 1.08; 95% CI 1.03 – 1.16; PR = 4.51; 95% CI 1.71 – 11.9) and religious practice (PR = 0.85; 95% CI 0.81 – 0.90; PR = 0.36; 95% CI 0.15 – 0.85). It follows that religious practice is a protective factor and being male is a risk factor for both alcohol use and alcoholism. It is hoped that the findings may contribute to prevention and assistance to these workers and, above all, allow a scientific understanding of the issue influencing decisions and directives of the worker.
