Resumo: This research investigates student participation through the implementation of a didactic unit on shuttlecock as a net sport. Thus, this study aims to analyze student participation in Physical Education classes, considering the various possibilities for involvement in classes during the teaching of shuttlecock sport. This is a sport with close ties to the native peoples of Brazil, as well as being one of the most diverse sports in Brazil. About student participation, we sought to broaden the discussion of a concept that is commonly related only to the execution of practical activities present in classes, but we propose to investigate participation in other possible functions to be developed during the teaching of sports. The research used a qualitative approach and was carried out at the Governador Garcia Neto State School, in Várzea Grande-MT, with 9th-grade students, following the methodological assumptions of action research. The school in question does not have a sports court, only a patio, which directly influenced the study. Two open-ended questionnaires were used as data collection instruments, the first being a diagnosis to understand their previous experiences in Physical Education classes and their prior knowledge related to the subject. Based on this instrument, an intervention plan was drawn up through the development of a didactic unit for teaching the sports shuttlecock. At the end of this didactic unit, the second questionnaire was applied to understand the impact of the didactic unit on student participation, as well as to check their opinion on teaching this sport. Another strategy we adopted in this study involved the use of a field diary, where we carried out participant observation, recording notes on the events that took place during the lessons. All the data collected was analyzed, organized, and related according to the theories studied, using the analysis of coding categories proposed by Bogdan and Biklen as a reference. The analysis and discussion of the results were based on two categories: "Development and implementation of the didactic unit on shuttlecocks: potential and challenges" and "Student participation in shuttlecock classes". Thus, we found that a broader approach to shuttlecock sport, offering participation as a player, but also as a referee, coach, and assistant referee, boosted student participation in classes. The diversification of the activities, reaching both the conceptual and attitudinal dimensions, also favored the students' engagement with the shuttlecock. Among the difficulties, we identified the location of the classes and the excess of absences during the implementation of the didactic unit. Finally, we conclude that a more holistic approach to sports content can enhance student participation and contribute to their academic training.
