Catalog, nomenclatural acts and distribution of Scarabaeinae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) from Ecuador

Resumo: The Ecuadorian territory is divided into four natural regions: the coastal lowlands, the andean highlands, the Amazon basin and the Galapagos Islands. Each of these regions has its own ecosystems and specific vegetation. The aim of this work is to present an updated catalog, including distributional data, for Scarabaeinae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) present in Ecuador. Data was compiled from ten scientific collections in Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Ecuador, France, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States, including most type specimens. Additionally, 350 bibliographic references were reviewed for the historical analysis of this group of beetles. This study was based on the examination of 13.538 scarabaeines. In Ecuador, there are currently 216 species and 33 genera There are no records of scarabaeines in the Galapagos Islands. Forty seven species are restricted to Ecuador. There are 23 new records for the country. Three new status: Canthon (Glaphyrocanthon) ohausi Balthasar, 1939., Deltochilum (Calhyboma) arrowi Paulian, 1939 and Dichotomius (Dichotomius) angustus (Luederwaldt, 1923); four new synonyms: Deltochilum (Deltohyboma) aureopilosum Paulian, 1938 = Deltochilum (Deltohyboma) barbipes Bates, 1870., Dichotomius (Dichotomius) provisorius Luederwaldt, 1925 = Dichotomius (Dichotomius) angustus (Luederwaldt, 1923) new status., Dichotomius hempeli Pereira, 1942 = Pinotus problematicus Luederwaldt, 1923 and Uroxys magnus Balthasar, 1940 = Uroxys latesulcatus Bates, 1891., and seven revalidated status: Canthidium (Eucanthidium) orbiculatum (Lucas, 1859)., Coprophanaeus (Coprophanaeus) edmondsi Arnaud, 1997., Coprophanaeus (Coprophanaeus) florenti Arnaud, 2002., Dichotomius (Luderwaldtinia) fortepunctatus (Luederwaldt, 1923)., Oxysternon (Mioxysternon) spiniferum curvispinum d’Olsoufieff, 1924., Phanaeus (Notiophanaeus) pyrois funereus Balthasar, 1939 and Phanaeus (Notiophanaeus) viridicollis Arnaud, 2002 are established. Eight species are erroneously attributed to Ecuador: Copris lugubris Boheman, 1858; Deltochilum (Deltohyboma) spinipes Paulian, 1938., Eucranium cyclosoma Burmeister, 1861., Ontherus (Ontherus) appendiculatus (Mannerheim, 1829)., Ontherus (Caelontherus) obliquus Genier, 1996., Ontherus (Ontherus) sulcator (Fabricius, 1775)., Onthophagus (Onthophagus) incensus Say, 1835 e Onthophagus (Onthophagus) ophion Erichson, 1847. The type specimens are ilustrated and maps of geographical distribution are provided.
