Resumo: The present study aims to reconstruct the trajectory of student assistance at the Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso, in the period of 1970 to 2010. With a technicalspecific administration for this purpose, the UFMT assists the college students, especially those socioeconomically vulnerable, with scholarship programs. The student assistance aims to provide necessary conditions to minimize the difficulties faced by students during the academic formation, in order to prevent repetition, retention and dropout. Although permeate the entire life of the institution, the student assistance is a little explored field of study, so the importance of rebuilding its trajectory. To develop the study were consulted documental and oral sources. The management reports, regulations, resolutions, newspaper reports and newsletters collected in the collections of the institution have formed the documental sources. The interviews with managers responsible for the actions and programs of student assistance in the different administrations of the Rectory compose the oral sources. The interviews were intended to complement the information gathered in the examined documentation. Through the documents, could be seen that scholarships and trainee programs are implemented in the institution since 1972. At first, the assistance actions were limited to paid scholarships and intra-institutional taxes exemptions. Subsequently, were created the Restaurante Universitário, the Casa do Estudante Universitário, the aid programs for food, events, among others, to support the academic experience and completion of university course. With the implementation of the Programa Nacional de Assistência Estudantil (PNAES) in 2008, were extended the possibilities of the programs due the availability of funds from the Ministry of Education for this purpose within Federal Institutions of Superior Education.
