This study explores the club identity that Bolivian fans have with Corumbaense Futebol Clube (CFC) in the Brazil-Bolivia border region. In this context, the fans develop a strong sense of belonging and identity with the club at the border. Thus, the general aim of this study was to describe the influence of the Brazil-Bolivia border context in Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), on the fans of the local team (CFC), identifying the reasons and processes that lead people living in Bolivia to support this Brazilian team. On the conceptual side, in addition to research on the themes of identity and the border, documentary research was carried out based on official CFC sources and reports in newspapers with wide circulation in the city of Corumbá-MS. In the empirical phase of selecting fans, the Snowball method was used, a research method by Lindstrom (2016). Therefore, 12 fans of the team who reside in Puerto Suárez and Puerto Quirrajo (Bolivia), cities on the Brazilian border with Corumbá-MS were selected. A semi-structured interview script was used with the selected subjects, divided into Question Blocks, seeking to provide the opportunity to capture each subject's oral history regarding the study theme, whose responses were captured in audio and subsequently transcribed and analyzed in inductive way into speech categories, according to each Block. The interviewees included 11 men (91.7%) and 1 woman (8.3%) aged between 18 and 60. The study revealed that fans who attended CFC matches were interested in attending games because of their friendship with current and former CFC players. Additionally, the border context influences and facilitates interactions between Brazilian and Bolivian fans during matches. It is also observed that the interaction between athletes and fans contributes significantly to the development of a sense of belonging and identity with the club. The data indicates that, in the context of CFC, football transcends geographical barriers by acting as a unifying factor that brings individuals from different backgrounds together through social bonds. Furthermore, the club plays a role of sporting “centrality” in the region. This study also highlights that Bolivian fans living in the border area under study have a preference for Brazilian football, with CFC being their preferred club and representing a certain identity among them. These findings contribute to future investigations into the construction of the identity of fans in border regions. Finally, it is expected that this study will contribute to a better understanding of the social and cultural dynamics that influence fan loyalty to their football clubs. |
