Resumo: |
Retirement is a highly anticipated stage of life for many workers, but for some, it is an undesirable phase. Some public institutions and private companies develop initiatives, such as the Retirement Preparation Program (PPA), to help employees transition smoothly into this stage of life. At the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), the PPA was established in 2010 and has been held annually ever since. Employees who participated in the program evaluated this initiative positively. This research presents, through an experience report, the PPAs developed over the past three years (2022, 2023, and 2024) and seeks to discuss the cultural aspects that influence workers' decisions regarding retirement, such as the appreciation of productivity in the contemporary world, fluid and transitory relationships in the context of work, the effects of cultural production by the media on aging, the prejudices faced by elderly people that can be enhanced in the intersectionality of other types of prejudices and the formation of a new identity, that of a retiree. Thus, the objective of this study is to contribute to the academic literature in Cultural Studies on the topic of retirement, considering that this subject is still underexplored in this theoretical field. Based on the conducted research, it was possible to conclude that culture plays a significant role in people's lives, as it can inspire choices and suggest paths. For this reason, retirement preparation initiatives must take into account the cultural aspects involved in the retirement process to achieve their intended success.
