Resumo: This study has as a research object the social representations of masculinities for men deprived of freedom. The central question of the study is: “How do men who committed crimes that led them to prison understand masculinity?”. Therefore, its purpose is to analyze the social representations of masculinities and their implications in the constitution of masculine identities. The results contribute to the discussion of relevant issues to gender studies, in a perspective that brings masculinity as a focus of investigation, based on the Social Representations Theory (SRT) in conjunction with gender studies in an analytical perspective. The investigation becomes relevant as it focuses on aspects of the constitution of masculinity in order to understand its constitution as a subject. Besides that, it may also enable knowledge about possible demands that encompass social, economic and subjective aspects. This is a qualitative, empirical and analytical methodology research. A semi-structured interview was carried out with 10 men who are in the open regime of deprivation of liberty. The obtained information was organized into empirical categories based on the interviewees' experiences and analyzed according to the content analysis technique. The results pointed to three large cores that represent areas whose social representations acted significantly, in a dialogue that mutually constructs the subject and the social. These areas, represented by life stories, affections, the relationship with health and violence were configured as important points in the identity constitution of subjects, directly affecting their identity processes. Finally, the central point is to think about how the perpetuated and centralizing ideas of social representations of masculinity can be modified and changed in order to transform collective behaviors that are harmful to the other and especially to the subject himself.
