SUMARY Linked to the research: "The contributions of Historical-cultural Psychology to the understanding of teacher illness in Higher Education" (FACCI, M.), the present study in the face of the intensification of work and its precariousness, historically produced in capitalist societies, seeks to answer the following problem: What ways of preservation or health promotion, which university professors use as a confrontation with illness? Therefore, it aims to investigate the possibilities of coping with the illness of the university professor. For this, the present study makes use of the methodological theoretical assumptions of Historical-cultural Psychology. It provides a brief historical overview of the understanding of illness and the activity of the university professor; it also exposes some fundamental concepts, such as activity, work, resistance and coping, used in the analysis of empirically obtained data. The empirical data are tables on attestates and licenses of university professors of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, from 2005 to 2019. Questionnaires applied to teachers in the humanities area of UFMS and interviews with some of these teachers, supposedly the least sick. Given the analyses, it is concluded that there are several possibilities of coping with the illness of university professors, among which resistance through so-called individual activities and active resistance, in the form of collective organization. It is perceived that there is a higher incidence of resistance and concludes that the possibility of coping with the teacher's illness as active resistance becomes more effective due to its collective character.
