Resumo: |
This study aimed to analyze the correlation between bone age determined by evaluating the lateral cephalometric radiographs with the dental development of 180 individuals of male and female with age between 8 and 17 year s. The intention was to evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of methods of determining the individual maturation using X-rays that are part of the documentation standard for diagnosis in Orthodontics. To determine the pubertal growth spurt the methods of O'Reilly; Yannielli (1988) and Hassel; Farman (1995) were applied to the image of the developmental stages of the cervical vertebrae and compared with the development of dental lower right hemi-arch of each individual determined by the method of Nolla (1960). The collected data were first evaluated by the mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation by age and separated by gender. The patients were submitted to statistical evaluation by Student's t test and Mann Whitney, and the method of Spearman. The results show that there is a strong correlation between the methods for evaluating the cervical vertebrae and tooth development with chronological age, even considering genders separately, the same occurred when comparing the three methods stud ied. We suggest that, within the limits of clinical use, these methods can be successfully used to estimate the stage of pubertal development and aid diagnosis of patients. |
