The research seeks to investigate the practice of reading images in art teaching in Brazil and point out assumptions within the historical-cultural perspective. A bibliographical research that, through understanding the practice of reading reproductions of works of art, builds on the importance of its presence in art teaching and its space at school, for the development and formation of human senses. We aim to contextualize the constituent elements of image reading practices, on the theoretical basis of historical and dialectical materialism, its intrinsic character to art teaching, with a view to building an aesthetic education. For the realization and elaboration of this work, we rely on theoretical studies based on Vigotski (2001, 2004, 2009), Saviani (2011, 2013, 2018, 2020), Duarte (2001a, 2001b, 2006, 2016, 2021), Marin (2009), Woof (2005), Fernandes (2016, 2022), Paes (2020), Schlichta (2009a, 2009b, 2011, 2012), between others. This research develops the argument that socialization, access to artistic codes and procedures, when art teachers have an understanding of the totality of educational work, amid contradictions typical of a capitalist society, they can criticize light practices rooted in common sense. This work, therefore, is developed with the support of historical-cultural psychology and historical-critical pedagogy, that the practice of reading images is enriching for the teaching of art, particularly in the formation of the senses, and access to knowledge artistic skills necessary for communication education.
