Resumo: The dissertation has as general objective to analyze the Records Continuum Model as a document management model in a digital archival environment. The Sistema Eletrônico de Informações (SEI) of the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia de Minas Gerais (IFMG) is used as a means of testing and analyzing Records Continuum Model through the action research methodology. Considering a high growth in the use of digital archival environments in many organizations, this research studies the Records Continuum Model as an alternative to the Life Cycle Model in document management in digital media. It presents a review of the main concepts of record management, archives management, the seven archival functions, and the Life Cycle Model. It presents the historical background of Continuum Theory and Records Continuum Model, going through the brief review of Recordkeeping and Series System. Discusses how Continuum Theory influences the creation of Records Continuum Model and analyzes the model focusing on their Axes and Dimensions. They are included as oppositional relationships between the Records Continuum Model and the Life Cycle model in the archival literature. They are analyzed as information provided by the Processo Eletrônico Nacional initiative about SEI, it’s adherence adoption by the community and its modules. The two main publications of the National Archives about SEI are analyzed and commented for a better understanding of the system. The IFMG is contextualized in its administrative structure and in its archival practices. Then, SEI’s experiences and characteristics of implementation on IFMG’s routine are reported Each Axis and Dimension of the Records Continuum Model is analyzed in the SEI-IFMG digital environment, resulting in the application of a model in a specific procedure and in its selected document. It is concluded that the model can be applied in pre-existing digital archival environments and that the SEI-IFMG lacks resources for a total application. It also concludes that the use of the Records Continuum Model as a guiding model for the practice of document management still needs further analysis.
