The present work was set to study neutral grounding specially in the distribution systems. The aim was to make an assessment of the Brazilian distribution system performance and show that it is possible to minimize their outages, by introducing a new method of neutral earthing. The paper suggests changes in the neutral grounding, from the solid or direct earthed method that has been widely adopted, to the resonant or Petersen coil earthing. Initially a review of the neutral grounding system is made. That is followed by an analysis of the distribution line lightning performance in Brazil. Finally, it is pointed out the advantages of the Petersen coil application.
