The general objective of this study was to propose a set of parameters for assessing sustainability in the management process of the DER/MG road network. To this end, the research was developed using the Design Science Research method and a case study. It began with a systematic review of the literature, covering technical standards and research on sustainable management of the road network and studies on sustainability assessment processes. The case study was carried out at DER-MG, studying the main projects and actions of the agency related to the research theme. The case study allowed us to conclude that to assess the sustainability of road assets, it is necessary to name the base of assets necessary for assessment and the sign of technical criteria necessary for the sustainable management of these assets. Based on the analysis of the data and taking as reference sustainability assessment models proposed in the literature, guidelines were proposed for assessing the sustainability of road assets. A preliminary model for assessing the sustainability of road assets was developed and evaluated by experts. The proposed model examined the most used criteria for assessing sustainability in the literature, which were adapted for the agency studied. This work contributed to the creation of a sustainability assessment model suitable for the creation of sustainable public policies with an assessment tool for road agencies in Brazil, as well as an aid in the execution of maintenance and public investment programs in the road sector.
