Resumo: It is known that personality traits are predictors of the use of coping strategies and successful performance at work. In sports context, studies are still incipient regarding performance prediction, and little is known about pattern association between personality and coping in soccer referees. The present study verified the pattern of association between personality traits and coping strategies in a sample of Brazilian soccer referees and their relation to sports performance. Were evaluated 310 referees from six states, which 278 males, 154 central referees and 150 assistant referees, with a mean age of 31.41 years (SD=6.44) and average arbitration time of 6.8 years (SD=5.79). The personality traits analysis pointed to statistically significant between referees and general population in the Conscientiousness and Extroversion scores, with the referees presenting higher averages, and Neuroticism, for which the referees presented lower scores. Regarding personality traits and coping strategies, statistically significant results were found for all five personality dimensions and problem-focused coping, highlighting the associations between emotion-focused strategies and Neuroticism and between social support and Extroversion. Regarding sports performance, none of the personality dimensions or coping strategies were noteworthy predictors, perhaps due to the way performance was measured in this study. A better categorization of sports performance in soccer referees becomes essential in order to find consistent physical, technical and psychological criteria that significantly evaluate the work performance of Brazilian referees
