Resumo: The general goal of this research was to investigate leisure and work engagement of Research Professors at Federal Universities. As a dispositional mental state of intense connection and pleasure while occupied with work activities, work engagement reveals positive implications about the psychological health of workers. With respect to leisure, even though some research recognizes that its absence contributes to diminished quality of living and well-being, evaluation of its role on psychological health lacks deeper investigation. This study presents results obtained with a sample of 35 full-time Research Professors at Brazilian Federal Universities and high productivity CNPq scholarship holders. These were 22 men and 13 women, averaging 31 years of age. For data collection, instruments such as a Sociodemographic Survey; Work Engagement Scale in the Brazilian version of Magnan, Vazquez, Pacico & Hutz and a Survey on aspects related to leisure were used. The results reveal that issues of work time and leisure, pertaining to University Teaching, are intrinsically related to what participants consider meaningful experiences in both their work and personal daily life, as well as show a search for balance between these instances.
