Resumo: Anesthesia is an important aspect of sleep research. General anesthetics produce a variety of brain states with diverse physiological and autonomic changes. Urethane is a general anesthetic currently used for research purposes in laboratory animals, which produces a cyclic and spontaneous alternation between REM and NREM sleep-like brain states that are similar to those observed in natural sleep. Thus, the aim of the present research was to systematically review the literature on sleep-type alterations in urethane-anesthetized rodents, both in terms of autonomic, physiological and electroencephalographic aspects. A systematic review of the pubmed database was carried out with the descriptors “Uretane” and “sleep”. The results showed similarity between the sleep states induced by Urethane with those of natural sleep, similarity of their autonomic and physiological changes and similarity between the alternations of electroencephalographic states. From the results found, it is concluded that Urethane induces a state similar to natural sleep, being a general anesthetic suitable for the study of sleep and of its autonomic changes, showing the importance of the adequate choice of general anesthetic for sleep research.
